Celebrating 100 Years of Black History Month

The 2026 Black History Month theme is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). This theme marks the 100th anniversary of the first Negro History Week, initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, celebrating a century of honoring African American history, culture, and contributions.

Key aspects of the 2026 theme include:

• Centennial Recognition: Celebrating 100 years of efforts to study and promote Black history, originally launched in February 1926.
• Significance of Commemoration: Exploring how the practice of commemorating Black history has shaped the identity, pride, and societal
  understanding of Black people.
• Focus on Truth: Emphasizing the importance of telling an accurate
and inclusive history, particularly in the face of contemporary challenges to education and historical narratives.
